Crazy Chickens and More Cows

We have quite the collection of chickens out here on the farm. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and hairstyles.

What do you get when you cross a chicken, fraggle rock, and Cruella Deville?

Afrotastic! She sure is a feisty one. This chick is my absolute favorite.

Having a variety of chickens makes for colorful eggs. We don't just have white eggs, or brown eggs, or green eggs (Yes, Dr. Suess is right! There are actually green eggs).

Here are some other interesting birds we have around here.

On another note, we got more cows today! Jason is working on writing up the specifics for why we are doing what we are doing. I just get to take pictures of them and look at how pretty they are. These are really good-looking cows.

How hilarious. I love those birds. Are those cows black baldies? Remember...I'm an animal science major.

Mwah!

They are called Black baldies because they are an Angus/Hereford cross. The Angus makes them black and the Hereford gives them the white patterns on their faces. Baldy is due to the white face looking bald in comparison to the black body. The Hereford bull is not a polled Hereford (meaning no horns) so some of these have horns. Some say when you lose the horns you lose the hips. Old wise tell maybe.

I tried to read your black baldies explanation... but half way through I started hearing blah, blah...

So, I refocused and then finished. Sorry, livestock is not my first area of interest, though I think it is SUPER-COOL that I have friends with bald cows and fraggles.

Saw this chicken photo and immediately thought "Rod Stewart reincarnated"!

Thanks for your wonderful blog. My wife and I have just started raising a few chickens in a back yard henhouse (with full access to a one-acre yard). I guess this makes them free-range chickens?

They sure are odd creatures. They eat anything and everything. Pigs with feathers.
