What's on your iPod?

Farmer Jason is BACK from his April sabbatical! Check it out here.
Please forgive me in advance for this confession of sorts. I've been introduced to the wonderful world of MP3 players.....iPods in particular.

What year IS it??????

I know its pathetic. I even own a Mac which makes this even more pathetic because of Macs cool factor. I'm 110% sure I'm not using my computer to the best of its abilities. For the first time ever, I used iTunes yesterday that has been on my computer for, oh, two years.

See, this gets even more pathetic.

But, the point of his post is not to prove how lame I am.

I am intrigued. My incredible hubby blessed me with an iPod nano for Mother's Day. I LOVE it! This is my very first MP3 player. I know, I KNOW!

He also blessed me with a substantial iTunes gift card to catch me up to speed.

Another confession since I'm getting it all out in the open..........Jason and I DON'T buy CDs ever! I don't even remember the last CD we bought. I love music. Make no mistake about that. Up until I was a married gal, I was extremely musically savvy making my way around the DFW area listening to cool bands. I was also into hip hop during that time too. Don't ask. It was the 90s and perfectly acceptable to go from grunge rock to rump shakin' gettin' jiggy wit it music.

I don't miss this life in the least. In fact, I'm rejoicing that I've been delivered from this life and can't even begin to fathom where I'd be if the Lord hadn't rescued me.

My husband is so wise when it comes to finances and I appreciate that so much. Did I just say that? I'll say it again. I really am thankful for his financial wisdom and frugality. When we were in premarital counseling, the pastor asked us what our hobbies were.

I answered the usual camping, MUSIC, antiquing, volleyball, cooking, etc.

Not my husband. His answer was simply 'numbers'. Say what?

I knew what he meant. He was very number conscious when we were first wed because we were broke like a joke.

Jason's musical philosophy: The radio is free. Why would anyone in their right mind buy a CD when you have a variety of music at your fingertips at all times?

But, I do miss having SOMETHING other than the radio.

So, what does a girl do when she gets an iPod nano and a gift card? She goes old school because she is scared/uninformed of the new school.

I downloaded the following in no particular order........because I'm cool like that:

Ice, Ice Baby- Vanilla Ice (my all-time favorite song & ringtone)
Gonna make you sweat- C & C Music Factory
Killing Me Softly- Fugees
Ready or Not- Fugees (makes you want to box)
U Can't Touch This- MC Hammer
Whoomp! There it is- Tag Team
Pump the Jam- Technotronic
Bust A Move- Young M.C.
I Like to Move It- Bang Gang

If those songs don't bring a smile to your face, I don't know what will. I giggled as I went through and listened to each one. Oh the memories. Did I also mention that I like to dance......A LOT!

I also downloaded some of Hillsong's newest stuff. I love their worship CD (excuse me, album since I'm an iTunes user now) along with some of my all-time favorite worship songs. Then I found a groovy children's worship album for Kaylyn.

So we have worship and 90s on the iPod. Seriously. I'm not even kidding. I would like to point out for a brief moment before you go thinking that I'm a heathen, that I didn't choose any songs with explicit lyrics for the sake of little ears possibly listening too- just fun stuff.

Well, I think I've done enough damage here in proving how un-cool of a person I am when it comes to anything pertaining to music and gadgets. Even though I said the goal of this post wasn't to prove my lameness, I'm pretty sure that it did just that.

The sad thing is that I LOVE music! I really do. And I want to find the 'good stuff'. KSBJ just isn't cutting it for me these days.

And I have an 8 GB iPod to fill up with 99 cent songs.

I love music about Jesus. That is my bread & water. I have this playing all day long in my home- KSBJ style of course.

I also love random music- cool beats, groovy lyrics, easy listening, rock (is it still called rock?), sisters singing their tail ends off, country (since we live on a farm), etc. Is that random enough for you? I told you, I love music.

Here is where you come alongside and help a sister out.

I want to know what is on your MP3s besides all of the AMAZING songs from the 90s that I've mentioned?

Don't be a hater.

You need some country in there (although I can still remember and love good 80's and 90's rock). Check out Rodney Atkins - newest CD - lots of good clean lyriced songs. And Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Carrie Underwood - most of their stuff is clean for little ears!!!

Jessie has an MP3 player - I just figured out how to load CD's onto it (she's had it since Christmas) - fortunately for her, it had a good radio in it - haha.

Take care,
Kris

If your "gettin' jiggy wit' it" was a reference to the hip-hop you were listening to back in the day... then you weren't listening to hip hop...

Regardless, because I like you so much, I offer you some humble recommendations, categorically:

Rock/Alt/Not-too-hard
- Sigur Ros - anything but the Von album
- Sleeping at Last - Ghosts or Keep No Score
- Explosions in the Sky - all instrumental, can't go wrong.

Hip Hop:
- LeCrae - (obviously)
- Trip Lee - If They Only Knew is good, and he's got a new album dropping soon
- Chris Brown - not Christian, so watch for the Explicit stuff, but man, I love that guy.

Country:
- yeah right, did you see who is leaving this comment?

Folk/Bluegrass:
- Patty Griffin
- Andrew Peterson - Behold the Lamb of God is a must, and all the others are great options as well
- Allison Krauss
- Nickle Creek
- Over the Rhine - I hear the new one (The Trumpet Child) is excellent. I've not yet heard it.

Christian stuff you won't hear often at LH:
- Misty Edwards - Always on His Mind
- Jason Upton - Great River Road or the more widely acclaimed Faith
- Rick Pino - the dude is crazy. I like (what I've heard of) him

Hope that helps. Make sure and share what you end up deciding, please.

don't hate?? Now why would I do that?

Well, I don't have an ipod, so I cannot tell you what I have on it, but IF I had own it would include:

LeCrae - props to DO(H)... I wish I could catch his new cd. Funny story = (you mentioned KSBJ not cuttin' it), his first cd has some of the most theologically accurate lyrics and more truth in one song than you'll hear in an afternoon on KSBJ.

also on my hypothetical ipod would be Casting Crowns, Passion, Tomlin, Ross King, and some Crowder.

There may be some other things (Veggietales), but I can't think of them.

Oh... and by the way... many of your "90s" songs are actually 80s. Which, consequently, is the worst decade in music history.

terrible stuff... absolutely terrible.

tsk, tsk... [i am now chaking my head in a display of pathetic pity.]

Yep sorry about that Bill. The majority of these songs are in fact from the 80s.....I'm really bad with dates/numbers. And those two decades totally mesh together for me as being 'dreaded school years'.

D.O.- Thanks for setting me straight and for the recommendations. How can you say that 'Whooomp there it is' is NOT hip hop? I've heard of exactly two of the artists mentioned (Allison Krauss & Andrew Peterson) so this should be fun checking out these peeps. I'm looking forward to it.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm even lower than you on the cool scale. I like music, but the last time I bought a CD was probably in Jr. High. My ipod? Filled with (free) sermons. I think I have about four songs, all downloaded from the village church, again for free.

I would say, "My husband's in school and we're broke," but I didn't download any music in college, even with my weekly allowance from my papa.

So speakers I would recommend:

Matt Chandler
Mark Driscoll
Ben Stuart
And you can find just about anyone else (like Piper, if you're a fan)

My favorite thing to do w/ my ipod is record scripture onto my (free) recording application, Audacity, and then I can "read" scripture while I fold clothes or clean the kitchen or whatever. I'm trying to record a ton before I have babies, because I think it will be super-useful then.

Yes, I know they sell audio Bibles, but they usually sound goofy or are crazy expensive, so I do this. Plus I can't find one in ESV.

Anyway, yes, I'm a nerd.

I do like Michael Buble. Does that help?

(OH, and I just discovered this year that you can podcast the news. So I've been enjoying that, too.)

Mine is loaded with worship...Chris Tomlin, Lincoln Brewster, Casting Crowns, Hillsong, etc. Then there's some random newer artists that I'm lovin these days. The songs I have from them are wholesome, clean songs. Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis, Colbie Caillat, and I gotta have me some David Cook! If you want to get some of his songs you better go download them before the finale next week because they wont be available after that..until he records an album.

This was a fun post!

Hey I don't think you know me, but I went to living hope a while back and am friends with Bethan and I love your blog!!! I would recommend checking out Dirt Poor Robins... they are cinematic rock and Christian... some of their stuff is overtly Christian and others are just subtle but they are all clean and great for jammin!

I know you said you don't buy CDs...but do you have any from years past that you still enjoy? You can upload them onto your Itunes very easily. Simply put it in the CD-ROM drive and your computer should show you a variety of ways to listen to it (oh wait...that's PC version...MACs probably automatically go to Itunes). Anyway, in Itunes, it should show you the CD title on the left-hand side and if you click on it, it will show you the playlist. At the bottom, there is a button that says Import. You can check or uncheck songs you don't want uploaded before you click on that. It's really pretty simple and a free way to add music to your playlist!

As for what I have on my Ipod...I agree with lots of the country, folk stuff...I will say the Indigo Girls are altogether quite lovely. Not Christian (by ANY stretch of the imagination!), but very lyrical and poetic. I suggest you start with their CDs "Swamp Ophelia" and "Rites of Passage". They're a lot like Sarah McLachlan and Patty Griffin (who people have already mentioned). Also, check out Mercy Me's old-school independent stuff...same with Caedmon's Call...they have some GREAT songs!

I inherited my 12yo daughter's old iPod...that's how uncool I am these days :)

The techno geek in me just purchased the Nike thing-y that works with your iPod. It tracks your distance, your pace, your time, your calories burned. And you can purchase workout & training "albums" from iPod. Now if my allergies would leave me alone so I actually feel like running again.
